The North Cascades are some of the most rugged and precipitous mountains in the northwest- they’re spectacular to view from the North Cascades Highway in the summer and are a skier’s playground in the winter.

The terrain options at NCHS range from mellow enough for advanced intermediates to psychotically technical steeps, with plenty in between. Our group’s experience trended toward the middle-ground due to weather, snow conditions, and two other groups’ interests to consider.

The season at NCHS generally starts sometime in early- to mid-January and ends in late March. Given the huge operating area and Cascade weather, snow conditions span the entire spectrum. However, the Methow Valley base of operations on the eastern edge of the Cascades allows regular flying, even during storm cycles, and accesses considerably dryer snow than typically found further west.

The day begins at the operation’s “barn” at 7:30 a.m. with paperwork, a weigh-in, and a comprehensive safety briefing by one of the guide staff, including a hands-on beacon search session and a helicopter-specific orientation by their longtime pilot, Seamus O’Daimhin.

North Cascade Heli-Skiing (NCHS) operates one helicopter, an A-Star B Series, which shuttles up to three separate groups of four skiers and a guide within their 300,000 acre permit area. Each group is flown from the “barn” to the day’s first ski zone in turn, and depending on group skill and pacing will move into other zones on subsequent runs.

NCHS offers several different ways to pay for heli-time, and ultimately you’re paying heli prices no matter which you opt for. That said, NCHS certainly falls on the affordable end of the heli operation spectrum and without any exchange rate hit.

Mazama has limited services other than the Mazama Store (good light breakfast option for day skiers) and the Freestone Inn and Cabins, where North Cascade Heli-Skiing is based. Plan on staying at the Freestone (walking distance) for a less-hectic morning as skiers are expected to meet the heli operations crew at 7:30 a.m.

There are many options for vacation homes or rental cabins in the Mazama area that can be booked online. Plan on bringing your own after-hours sources of amusement as nightlife is virtually non-existent.

After taking advantage of the Silver Star Special and crushing four runs at a frenetic pace with two other groups in little over two hours before we were weathered out for the remainder of the day, we realized you can do a lot of skiing with NCHS.

Knowing that, we’re planning to put together a two-load group (8 skiers) for an exclusive use booking for next year. Our estimates, after discussing it with guides and pilot, are that each group could get 10 or more runs per day for about the same price as other programs after additional run charges, but without pacing pressure from a third group and with much more control over terrain selection.

1.5 miles west of Mazama, WA (about fifteen miles west of Winthrop) in the Methow Valley. Plan on a 2.5 hour drive northwest of Wenatchee on the North Cascades Highway (Hwy. 97 N. to Route 153 to Route 20). This highway is closed west of Mazama in the winter. For a fee, NCHS will fly over to the west side of the mountains (2 hrs. from Seattle) to pick you up and return you there after skiing.
