Compare the Salomon Astra to its wider sister in Salomon's All-Mountain series of women's skis. The two are similarly built, but with its 78-mm waist, the Astra is quicker edge to edge than the 85-mm-waisted Gemma, with better bite on hard snow. (Attention, Eastern skiers.) It also has a slightly tighter sidecut radius for can't-miss carves on groomed snow. Both have a touch of tip rocker to smooth out terrain shocks, plus a layer of basalt fiber to dampen the vibrations that occur at high speeds. The Astra comes with a lighter, less-expensive, 10-DIN Salomon Lithium binding. Salomon has been headquartered in Annecy, France, since its founding there in 1947. Along with sister brands Atomic and ArcTeryx, it is a division of Amer Sports of Finland, which acquired it in 2005. Its U.S. headquarters are in Ogden, Utah. -J.C.
