PRO: This far down the stiffness scale, power and quickness begin to suffer. But so what? Salomon’s X Wave 8.0-now paired with a women-specific Rush version-remains a triumph of boot design for its sensible blend of performance fundamentals (good rearward support, balanced stance) with a fit that strikes a fine balance between control and comfort. Compared to the X Wave 10.0 (see AME), its power strap’s a little narrower, its liner a little less heat-moldable, its cuff alignment less adjustable. The differences are minor, and only those needing the stiffness should spend extra. “So easy, uncomplicated and effective,” says Hogen. “Just great functionality coupled with comfort.” CON: Not a great choice for narrow feet or heavier experts, and the 8.0 will never be described as an “exciting” boot.
