Elan’s Black Edition Ripsticks Show You Don’t Need Heavy Metal for Stability

Elan released an early preview of the new Black Edition Ripsticks, and they sold out in two weeks. Luckily, more will be available this fall.

Entering its 76th season, Slovenian ski brand Elan will update the brand’s Black Edition skis for 2021-’22. The limited-release lineup includes a Black Edition Ripstick 96, Black Edition Ripstick 106, and two Black Edition Wildcat women’s models.

All of the Black Edition skis build off of current models that were featured in SKI’s 2021 Gear Guide. The Black Edition Ripsticks add two additional carbon rods in the shovel and tail, which, combined with the two full-length carbon rods found in the standard Ripstick, means there are four total carbon rods. These four rods—which Elan calls QuadRod technology—work together to provide more energy and responsiveness at high speeds without adding a lot of weight. The Black Edition skis are only about 100-grams heavier than the normal Ripsticks.

Also, you can’t say “QuadRod” out loud and not smile.

Additionally, the brand is releasing two Black Edition Wildcat skis. The women’s Wildcat line is heavily influenced by Elan’s W Studio and consists of piste-friendly skis that aren’t afraid to explore the entire resort.

“Elan’s fresh take on the all-mountain design found in the…Wildcat [skis] were inspired by optimizing your energy within every turn,” said Global Product Director Melanja Korošec in a press release.“So in return, you can maximize your good times on the mountain.

The new Black Edition Wildcat models—which include the 86 C and the 76 C—are built with Elan’s Amphibio Truline W Technology, which puts more materials over the skis’ inside edges for better power transfer. The Black Edition Wildcat skis are also embellished with Swarovski crystals on an elegant black top sheet to add extra style points in the lift line.

Elan sent a few Black Edition Ripsticks to select retailers across the country in late January 2021 and they sold out within two weeks. Skiers who missed out on this sneak peek can expect to find more of them—as well as the Black Edition Wildcat skis—this fall.

SKI expects a review in the 2022 print edition of the Gear Guide and on Active Pass. Get a head start and sign up for Active Pass today to make sure you get the Gear Guide this fall.
