Pro Völkl makes wider skis (Sumo, Sanouk), but the popular Gotama—now in its fourth year—aims to be a twin-tipped powder ski that’s fun to ride when it hasn’t snowed recently. Testers deemed it one of the burlier skis in the test. A layer of spring steel gives its wood-core laminate construction integrity but doesn’t dampen the ride or add excessive weight. Its hard-snow performance is unmatched in this category, but beware: Despite a slightly wider tip and tail this year, its still-modest sidecut would rather go down the hill than across it. Wheatleigh called it "floaty and manageable in tight terrain." Gotama skiers may not know much about self-denial, but they can sniff out the path to Nirvana every time. Con Might be a little too burly for weekend powder hounds who prefer easy float over power.
