Pro Wood core, vertical sidewalls, two sheets of metal: No wonder the Mantra thinks it’s a race ski. Don’t take it in slalom gates, but don’t be surprised by its guts. The way Völkl sees it, even in a place like Tahoe or Utah, you’ll ski more crud and groomed than untracked powder. The Mantra aims for a balance of skills—and it succeeds, melding power with grace. Testers deem it a likely candidate for a Western skier’s one-ski quiver. But make no mistake: With its 94-mm waist, it puts up the top score for Flotation. Women testers—admittedly stronger than the average girls—preferred it slightly over the women-specific version, Aura, though most women will be better served by the Aura. "Solid and reliable," said Howard. "It gives back what you put in, always predictably." Con Too wide for much fun in bumps.
