Pro As Völkl updates its line by incorporating its best construction throughout, the AC3 is the latest to benefit. But while Extended Double Grip, with extra mass over the edges, brings grippy power to higher-end skis, it’s toned down here for versatility. Testers noticed the two sheets of metal, giving the AC3 top scores in Long Turns, Stability at Speed and Hard-Snow Grip. But Völkl lightens the ride by using foam alongside wood in the core. That explains the high scores in Forgiveness and Rebound Energy, as well as tester raves for its broad performance range. A 76-mm waist carves all but the hardest snow yet never sinks too deeply on soft groomers. And in powder? Bliss. "Not so subtle you can’t direct it," said Hochman, "and not so powerful it directs you." Con Width not ideally suited for quick turns or grip on ice.
