kristen lignellKristen Lignell
5′ 6″; 120 lbs.
Claim to fame: Perennial Warren Miller movie star; ski model; ski mountaineer (climbed and skied Denali last spring).
Fit thought: “Skiers do a lot of leg work, but the upper body is important, too. It’s essential for carrying skis and a pack when hiking in the backcountry.”
Favorite move: Lunge Walk with Biceps Curl
Targets: Quadriceps, hamstrings, biceps; also improves balance.
How to: Holding a dumbbell in each hand, lunge forward with the left leg while doing a biceps curl with the right arm. (“It’ll come naturally,” says Kristen.) Then bring the right leg forward, even with the left. Repeat the sequence lunging forward with the right leg. As you “walk,” make the movements slow and controlled. “You can march around your house doing this move,” she says.
Reps & sets: Do 15 lunges using 5-10 pound dumbbells, 2-3 sets.
Kristen’s tip: Think like a turtle: “Pace yourself: Start out with low weights and stretch a lot. Then take it easy on the first day back on skis.”
