Vail Resorts may still be giving Alterra Mountain Company a run for its money in the race to acquire more ski resorts, but there’s no contest between the two ski industry giants when it comes to backcountry ski experiences. Alterra’s CMH Heli-Skiing and Summer Adventures offshoot already owns and operates 11 heli-skiing lodges throughout Canada, and today the company announced the acquisition of Purcell Heli Skiing.
Perched on a 13-acre tenure in the Purcell mountains of B.C. near Glacier National Park, Purcell Heli Skiing has been operating heli-skiing trips for more than 30 years. The lodge was founded by former CMH guide Rudy Gertsch in 1974 and has been operated by the family ever since, becoming a popular destination thanks to its proximity to Calgary and its 495,000 acres of idyllic heli-skiing terrain.
Because of the company’s historic ties to CMH and its proximity to the company’s Bobbie Burns Lodge, the acquisition seems a natural fit. It also adds significantly to CMH’s overall heli-skiing tenure, which now comprises 3 million acres throughout the Bugaboo, Purcell, Selkirk, Monashee, and Cariboo mountain ranges in B.C.
“Purcell Heli-Skiing is a storied and respected outfit, and we are grateful for the opportunity to continue founder Rudi Gersch’s legacy and history of creating incredible memories,” said Rob Rohn, President and COO of CMH.
Purcell Heli Skiing currently offers one, two, and three-day trips for up to six people with two guides, excluding lodging and transportation. CMH will now manage all bookings and available reservations will be incorporated into CMH’s current product offerings. The company will honor all confirmed bookings for the upcoming winter seasons.
While CMH Heli-Skiing and Summer Adventures is an Alterra Mountain Resort company, the operation does not offer discounts on winter trips to Ikon Pass holders. It does, however, offer Ikon Pass holders early booking privileges which allow pass holders to select their preferred trip dates to CMH destinations for the following season one day before the general public. Ikon Pass holders also receive a 10-percent discount on summer adventures to CMH’s Cariboos, Baboos, and Bobbie Burns lodges.
