Well, that’s not a great look. FIS is in hot water (again) this week after reports began surfacing about the massive discrepancy in prizes at a World Cup ski jumping qualifier in Germany. According to a CNN report, the men’s winner of the Two Nights Tournament in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was awarded nearly $3,300, and the women’s winner walked away with some shampoo and hand towels. Understandably, the move rubbed a few folks the wrong way and FIS was forced to defend itself against the glaring gender gap of its own creation. The answer? Women don’t actually earn prize money at all during qualification events, and the shampoo was actually a gesture of good faith, nothing more, but definitely something less. I don’t know a lot about a lot, but I’m pretty sure they just stuck a match in their own gas can.

Hotel fire kills 79 at Turkey ski resort.
Tragedy struck in northeast Turkey this week as an early morning blaze ripped through a 12-story hotel at a popular ski resort, leaving 79 people dead and 50 injured. The fast-moving fire caught the nearly 300 hotel guests and staff off guard, giving patrons little time to escape. It is reported that guests began tying bedsheets together and climbing down from windows to escape the flames, but rescue was made difficult due to the hotel’s location on the side of a sizable cliff. The Turkish government is actively investigating the incident and declared a national day of mourning this Wednesday.
Ski lift collapse injures 15 in Pyrenees.
The cursed year in chairlifts rolls on with reports of a ski lift collapse in Spain, leaving 15 people injured, including two in critical condition. The incident occurred at Astún in the Spanish Pyrenees when a pulley failed, allowing lift cables to slack with chairs crashing to the ground. That is some serious nightmare fuel right there.
