On the heels of the Vail Resorts partnership with National Brotherhood of Skiers and other nonprofits aiming to increase diversity in winter sports, Alterra Mountain Co. has rolled out a collaboration of its own for the coming season. The Ikon Pass parent company just announced a partnership with the Share Winter Foundation, a nonprofit that provides grants to organizations dedicated to getting underserved youth on the slopes.
The multi-year alliance will consist of almost $4 million in cash and services provided by Alterra, including lift tickets, rentals, lessons, and meal vouchers at 14 of its North American resorts, including Winter Park, Colo., Snowshoe, Va., and Crystal Mountain, Wash. The massive donation will allow Share Winter to increase its grant-giving capacity in a big way—to the tune of an estimated 13,000 on-snow visits by kids who otherwise might never experience skiing or snowboarding.
“With this game changing partnership, Alterra Mountain Company is breaking down some of the greatest barriers to entry in skiing and riding,” said Constance Beverley, CEO, Share Winter Foundation. “The opportunity presented by this partnership is phenomenal, but the energy and support we’ve felt from Alterra Mountain Company and its employees takes this collaboration to the next level.”
What’s more, to ensure that the on-snow experience doesn’t end with the last lesson, Alterra and Share Winter are developing a “graduate” component for kids who’ve completed their learn-to-ski program that’s designed to keep them on the slopes, as well as a mentorship program that aims to introduce kids to jobs in the snowsports industry.
“Alterra Mountain Company is committed to building a global mountain community and is thrilled to support Share Winter Foundation’s vision of making snowsports more accessible by providing on-snow experiences to help instill a lasting impact and a love of the outdoors in youth traditionally denied access to the sport,” said Karen Sanford, Alterra’s Chief Legal & Social Responsibility Officer.
Prior to this partnership, Share Winter typically received about $3 million in grant applications every season and was able to fund around $1 million, said Beverley. The nonprofit will now be able to reach three-times more youth and continue to make an impact beyond the initial introduction.
“This is how real change happens,” said Beverley.
