Park City, UT, Jan. 17, 2001–Podium performances by Erik Schlopy (Park City, UT), Sarah Schleper (Vail, CO) and Bode Miller (Franconia,NH) plus a couple of top-10s for Jonna Mendes (Heavenly, CA) earned all four promotion to the Alpine A Team to start the new year, theU.S. Ski Team announced Wednesday.

In addition, Lindsey C. Kildow (Vail, CO) was promoted to the B Team, based on results from Chevy Truck Super Series and Nor Amraces, U.S. Ski Team VP-Athletics Alan Ashley said.

Schlopy had five top-10s in the first seven weeks of the season, including second in a giant slalom Dec. 21 in Bormio, Italy – the bestGS result by a U.S. man since Phil Mahre won a World Cup GS in March 1983. That podium followed a third-place result from Miller, whohad had three top-10s, just four days earlier in another giant slalom in Val d’Isere, France.

Schleper posted the best result of her career Dec. 30 in a GS in Semmering, Austria, finishing second. It was her second top-3 of theseason, coupled with a third-place finish Dec. 10 in a slalom in Sestriere, Italy. Mendes, who scored her first World Cup points at LakeLouise during the 1998 season and then her first top-20 there in ’99, was 10th Dec. 1 and sixth the next day in back-to-back downhillsat the Canadian Rockies ski area.

“These four skiers have turned-in some outstanding results and earned their way to the A Team,” Ashley said. “Not only have they racedwell so far, but it’s given everyone a pick-me-up as we look ahead to the alpine World Championships, which open the end of the monthin St. Anton.”

The championships run Jan. 28-Feb. 10 in the Austrian resort.
