CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (USST Release)—Like reports of Mark Twain's death, whispers of an ongoing clash between emerging stars Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) and Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) are greatly exaggerated.

At various times, the two talents - heading to their second Olympics next month at just 21 years old - have tried to explain they're teammates, they're friends, there's no blood feud between them.

Perhaps they may have buried the question Friday during the press conference following the women's super G opening three days of racing in Cortina - and where Mancuso grabbed her first podium in second place and Kildow took third. When the question arose, Mancuso immediately replied playfully, "On the road, we try to request bunk beds everywhere we go. Sometimes (Kildow) tells me stories before I go to bed because I'm afraid of the dark.

Kildow added, "But only when she's really scared do I tell her stories.

When the laughter died down, Kildow said, "We're friends. Everyone's a competitor, but especially with the girls on your team, you have to have friends, or you'd never be happy. We're friends.
