Only in Europe will you find ski resorts this expansive. Verbier is made up of what is essentially five joined resorts (picture five Breckenridges linked together). It includes 89 lifts (including some of the highest trams you'll ever ride) and a whopping 255 miles of runs. There's something for every level of skier, from beginner to pro. All that, and a lift ticket costs just $62 US.

Monarch was a quick stop because it was our opportunity to make up time. It was too bad because it looked to be a great little mountain with plenty of hits. We skied soft snow on a long blue run called Slo-Motion and dipped into the trees along the sides whenever we could to get a taste of the deep stuff.

Monarch reminded me of the resorts back East like Vermont's Bromley Mountain with its small, rustic looking lodge, double chairs, and above average terrain.
