Design File: Ultra-Modern Euro Chalet

A new project in France’s Trois Vallées reinvents the traditional chalet image.

If a European chalet evokes scenes of canoodling in front of a roaring fireplace, you’re about to have your outdated (and kinda cheesy) stereotype rocked. Chalet Béranger, in the Trois Vallées region of the French Alps, is a modernist’s wet dream, with sprawling concrete floors, sleek industrial lighting, a dramatic oxidized steel staircase and futuristic touches straight off the space station—including a metal-and-concrete hearth suspended from the ceiling. Romantic? Not so much. Instead, retreat to the floating bed in one of the guest rooms (pictured) and commence the canoodling. Check it out:
