If you are one of the many skiers and snowboarders who have been losing Powder-8 partners to rising lift ticket costs and the unfathomable attraction of curling, several eastern resorts have devised a solution — host an intervention.
After-school specials popularized interventions in the early 1990s with parents and friends cornering loved ones to bemoan drinking problems, drug habits and low SAT scores. In these technology-driven times, American Skiing Company (ASC) has unveiled a flashy web-based marketing campaign, which allows skiers to encourage their friends to rejoin the winter warrior ranks and return to the mountains.
Sugarloaf/USA and Sunday River in Maine; Killington, Pico and Mount Snow in Vermont; and Attitash in New Hampshire prescribe a strict therapy of wit and humor to lure skiers and riders back to the slopes this year. At
, visitors can create customized intervention programs using a combination of seven characters and six resort settings. A winning alliance of spandex-clad Austrian Ernst, woodsy Scot Ian, Midwestern Molly Coddle, pontificating backwoods psychologist Dr. Bill, hip slangster Angus, puffy-wearing Slim and angry, Angry Jim can induce the most rooted couch potatoes to come to their skiing and riding senses.
At the website, visitors have the opportunity to purchase ASC’s All for One Pass, a mighty offering, which serves up the most Eastern vertical and acreage clout under a single lift pass. Modeled after Vail Resort’s Colorado Pass, the All for One Pass provides direct lift access to six of the East’s premier resorts, all but Pico ranked among the SKI Magazine 2006 Reader Resort Survey (Killington — 3rd in the East; Sugarloaf — 4th; Sunday River — 12th; Attitash — 14th; Mount Snow — 17th).
