A
t Fortress-the highest ski area in the Canadian Rockies, with a base elevation at 6,692 feet-captivating sights of jagged, snow-laced peaks are in your view at all times. This is a bare-bones resort with old lifts that take skiers up 1,082 vertical feet to access three faces, where there is easy cruising and great tree skiing on powder days. It’s a hit with snowboarders because there are lots of natural halfpipes.
Insider Tip Keep an eye on the snow reports. Fortress gets storms that dump 2 to 3 feet when other resorts don’t get anything.
Great Deal This is a day trip for Calgarians, just more than an hour’s drive (70 miles) from the city. Vacationers in Banff can day-trip on buses Tuesdays and Fridays.
Vital Stats Skiable acres: 328; number of lifts: 6; vertical rise: 1,082 feet; average annual snowfall: 630 inches; lift ticket price: $29.75.
