The route that heads up the mountain in the above photo represents a mere two-mile section of the 27-mile-long Trofeo Mezzalama race. Ouch. To the right of the mountain’s summit, which sits at 13,864 feet, roped teams head down to the Felik Glacier checkpoint. In April 2005, American mountaineers Mark Twight and Dylan Freed became the first Americans to enter the race.
