First Big Snow Covers Vail

Other Activities: At the National Alpine Ski Camp, racers choose three after-training activities daily, including windsurfing, kiteboarding, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing, and go karts, among others.

Vail, CO, Oct. 29--It's dumping at Vail. An October snow storm has dumped at least six inches of snow at the resort. At times, the on-again, off-again flurries made for whiteout conditions, boosting enthusiasm among the skiing community.

"The ski swap is this weekend and with the snow coming down there's alot of excitement over the upcoming season," said Kristen Yantis, Vail Communications Manager.

Although this isn't the first autumn snowfall at Vail, it is the first all-day storm to cover the mountain. The solid snow base and colder temperatures mean that the mountain crew will be able to first up the snow guns for the first time this season. Vail is aiming to open just three weeks from today, on Nov. 19.
