Getting There From Calgary, take the Trans Canada No. 1 west past Banff to Highway 93. Drive southwest on 93. At Radium Hot Springs, turn south and proceed 6 miles on Highway 93/95 to Invermere. Turn right and follow the signs to Panorama, 12 miles up Toby Creek Road.
Eats Toby Creek Dining Room’s top-flight northern Italian cuisine is worth the trip to Panorama in and of itself. Lovers of fine dining will want to make the trip into Invermere to sup at Strand’s.
Drinks When in Canada, do as the Canadians do: Drink Bloody Caesars and Kokanee beer. You’ve got your choice of two spots: The Kicking Horse Bar and the Jackpine Pub.
Lodging Tamarack Lodge is Panorama’s newest and nicest ski-in/ski-out facility. Horsethief and Toby Creek Lodges are older but still satisfactory. For a truly unique and romantic experience, rent the on-mountain, one-room Elkhorn Cabin for a night.
Locals’ Tip For a low-key lunch on-mountain, grab a bratwurst or burger fresh off the grill on the back of the snowcat parked at the top of Sun Bowl, or bring your own lunch to the picnic table overlooking Red’s Bowl.
Extras R.K. Heli-Skiing, located in the Heli-Plex next to the Horse Thief Lodge, bucks the extreme backcountry trend by specializing in single-day packages for novice skiers and heli-ski virgins. Call (800) 661-6060 or visit www.rkheliski.com for information.
