Inn of the Month: Lodge and Spa at Breckenridge

Breckenridge, Colorado

If your vision of the perfect ski vacation involves adrenaline-filled days followed by quiet nights, consider The Lodge and Spa at Breckenridge. After a day of exploring Breck’s four peaks and an afternoon of shopping on historic Main Street, you can ride the free shuttle back to the lodge and settle into one of the fireside chairs in the great room. The view from here—a spectacular cliff-top vantage 2 miles across the valley from town—is breathtaking in every direction. Immerse yourself in a book from the library or move to the chess table and pick up a carved piece to wait for a game.

If Breck’s slopes haven’t totally worn you out, take one of the lodge’s aerobics or yoga classes, then relax in the sauna or make snow angels between dunks in one of the four Jacuzzis or the indoor pool. Feeling the need to strengthen your quads? The athletic club has both Nautilus equipment and free weights. On the other hand, if the hill has gotten the best of you, make your way downstairs to the spa, and name your cure: Swedish massage, a Moor mud treatment and the Dr. Hauschka facial are just three options. Come Friday evening, kick off the weekend to the rhythmic sounds of the Summit County Jazz Consort. The group plays during après-ski and throughout dinner in The Top of the World Restaurant and Bar, which overlooks the town and is located on the lodge’s lower level. Choose from 40 varieties of single-malt scotch and an extensive wine and port list that complements inspired dishes such as Colorado elk loin with applewood smoked bacon, haricots verts, baby carrots and gorgonzola-mushroom ravioli. Following dessert, diners often gather for impromptu stargazing parties on the enormous deck.

Rates for the 45 rooms run from $135 for a deluxe room during low season to $425 for a suite during high season, including a great breakfast. Contact: The Lodge and Spa at Breckenridge, 112 Overlook Dr., Breckenridge, CO 80424; (800) 736-1607; .
