Lake Placid Pub and Brewery started off like most microbreweries do, with a homebrew kit and a love of beer. Fourteen years later, the brewery is still thriving, has won several awards, and is popular with both locals and visitors, including President Bill and Senator Hilary Clinton. The Clinton’s favorite brew is the brewery’s signature Ubu Ale—a strong English ale featuring a smooth, rich maltiness complimented by the perfect amount of English hops. Word has it the beer was named for a legendary chocolate lab with a taste for ale. Since the strong ale pairs well with red meats, try the pub’s open face roast beef sandwich or steak tips—marinated with a tasty bourbon sauce and served with Yukon Gold potatoes and steamed veggies. Anything on the menu is pretty good, but the classic pub fare pairs bestwith their beers. If you happen to be swinging through in early February, don’t miss the Central NY Brewers Festival where you can taste over 60 craft beers made in the area, including Lake Placid Craft Brewing.
