The Omnia, Zermatt’s newest hotel, is no typical Swiss mountain inn. The steel-and-glass building faces the Matterhorn from atop a chunk of granite 150 feet above town. Guests ride an elevator through the rock to New York designer Ali Tayar’s ultra-contemporary, chic take on a mountain ski lodge.
The lobby’s leather club chairs and velvet settees are set amidst stacked-slab granite tables and white oak floors. The reading room offers multilingual esoterica, vintage Interview magazines, fine cigars and 70 labels of scotch. A floating steel-and-glass staircase leads up to the 30 guest rooms and down to the spa, with its stainless-steel infinity pool, sauna and caldarium.
Upstairs, rooms range in size from 260 to 1,180 square feet, with private balconies and telescopes. All are furnished in a clean, minimalist style with a focus on 20th-century American modernism. No, not your typical Swiss mountain inn.
