As the longtime travel editor for SKI, I’ve hung my hat (er, helmet) in many a hotel room. Over the last several years, I’ve had the opportunity to bring my family with me on several trips, allowing me to cover ski resorts from a kid-friendly perspective and weigh in on the best lodging options for ski families. And yet, not once, have I ever opened the door to my hotel room and found bunk beds. That’s just what happened at Mountain Modern, a renovated 135-room motel in the heart of Jackson, Wyo.
The property used to be the Painted Buffalo Inn, which was bought in 2016 and reopened the following year as Mountain Modern. The difference is night and day. From Western-inspired décor refined with clean lines and a contemporary vibe to a smart use of space thanks to copious shelving and cubbies, the rooms feel spacious and airy. There are three rooms types: double queen rooms, queen room with one bunk, and deluxe double queens with two bunk beds—the latter being the most ingenious use of space for families traveling with kids.
We comfortably fit our family of five in a double bunk room—two queens each with single bunks overhead—plus several suitcases, five boot bags, and a duffel or two, all with room to move around.
The Broadway location is a quick stroll to Jackson’s elk-antler-adorned Town Square and its accompanying restaurants, galleries, shops, and more. Sign up the evening before for the daily ski shuttle, which drop you at the resort 12 miles down the road. The compact lobby café serves a small menu of complimentary breakfast items in the morning. When we were there, we noshed on delicious waffles coated with powdered sugar one day, and a choice of a bacon or egg biscuit the next. You can opt for additional choices for a small fee.

In addition to getting to sleep on the top bunk during our stay, my boys also loved the indoor hotel pool and hot tubs. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done after a day on the slopes. We also enjoyed sitting around the lobby’s freestanding fireplace and flipping through one of the many books strewn about. Brush up on your Wyoming state history or enjoy beautiful imagery from Yellowstone National Park.
Overall, Mountain Modern does an impressive job with the space it has, successfully transforming a ho-hum motel into a cozy and welcoming, yet chic and smart lodging option in a great downtown location. Rooms from $119; mountainmodernhotel.com
