Turns out you can get there from here. Loon, an easy 2.5 hours from Boston, still tops the Access rankings. With that comes a challenge, though: keeping the snow fresh and the crowds moving. The former isn’t a problem: Loon ranks No. 6 for Grooming, No. 7 for Snow. Even after last year, readers rave. As for crowding, they say, there’s still work to do. This season, Loon expands its new live-info signage to steer guests more efficiently, and events and lunch specials will be used to lure folks over to the still underused South Peak area. Lodging is already strong at No. 8, and Loon is spending $8 million on Loon Mountain Club upgrades (including restaurant and spa renovations). Some readers find Loon a bit “homogenous” (No. 26 for Character). But for good snow easily reached, its appeal is obvious.
Family Trail >> Twitcher, added last year at South Peak, is moderately steep but doable, with nice views for family-photo backdrops.
Aprés Spot >> The newly updated Woodstock Inn Brewery: better brewing facilities, larger bar, lots of fun.
On-Hill Lunch >> At Camp III, the specialty bratwurst is reliably satisfying.
Off-Hill Restaurant >> Gypsy Café offers fare from all parts of the world, prepared with flair.
