Smuggs is a magical place. It has great skiing with good snow and challenging terrain, but its charm is that it is a throwback to resorts as they used to be. A local’s mountain, but welcoming to outsiders as well. Also, it does not hurt that the views from the top are drop-dead gorgeous.”

4. Okemo, Vt.

Okemo, Vt. Okemo

“If the snow is bad at Okemo, the snow at other resorts is unskiable. Okemo does the best job recovering from those terrible January rain storms. What Ok gives up in quantity of steep terrain they make up for in quality of snow. A very consistent product.”

5. Bretton Woods, N.H.
