Schweitzer, ID Headed for Destination Resort Status

Sandpoint, ID, Feb. 23–Staying in tune with a major theme for ski resorts these days, Schweitzer Mountain, ID is planning to expand. Recently, they announced the addition of a second high-speed quad that will operate for the 2000-01 season. Construction is slated to begin this summer.

The $3 million Outback Express will replace the existing Number Five lift and transport guests to the summit in half the time. The chair will more than double uphill capacity bringing 2,600 people to the summit per hour instead of 980. The new quad will be in roughly the same location as the old lift, but it will have improved loading and unloading stations.

“The new high-speed lift is a big step in taking Schweitzer to the next level,” said Tom Fortune, Schweitzer’s General Manager. “With two high-speed quads, Schweitzer will have an even greater appeal to both our local and destination guests.”

The new high-speed quad is only part of a capital improvement plan for the mountain. Last year, Schweitzer Mountain was purchased by Seattle-based Harbor Properties and Resorts who have started a campaign to bring the small northern Idaho mountain to destination resort status.

“Adding new chairs is part of our overall strategy of improving the guest experience at the mountain,” continued Fortune. “We hope to make additional announcements on the next few weeks about other on-mountain and base area improvements.”

Some future improvements include upgrading the Number One and the Number Six lifts, building a new condo/hotel called the White Pine Lodge, and adding more amenities.

Other improvements that have been installed this season include expanded beginner terrain, two new runs and improved existing runs, a new rental and repair shop, additional retail space, and a renovated Selkirk Lodge (formerly known as Green Gables).
