Since 1992, Wachusett has invested more than $2.5 million in energy-savings measures that have resulted in a savings of more than 3 million kilowatt-hours (over $200,000) a year. Such projects include improvements to lighting, lodging and snowmaking systems. As part of a 10,000-square-foot base lodge addition, the area is incorporating high efficiency lighting, radiant foundation heating, skylights and glass walls to allow for natural lighting, timers for common-area lighting and individual room thermostats. Wachusett’s results are impressive especially because it is a commuter resort whose survival depends on night skiing and snowmaking. (Finalist: Breckenridge, Colorado)
