Nestled in a secluded box canyon surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks, Telluride’s splendor will take your breath away before its 8,750-foot altitude does. The town’s mining history is reflected in the Victorian homes, shops and hotels that line the National Historic District of Main Street, preserving the feel of the 1800s. East of town, connected by a gondola that drifts over Telluride’s mid-mountain, is Mountain Village, with its five-star hotels, spas and multimillion-dollar homes of the rich and famous, such as Oprah Winfrey’s.

During summer, Telluride hops with festivals. The world-renowned Bluegrass Festival (June 21-24) sells out months in advance, and Mountain Film (May 25-28) is another big draw.

But the best reason to come to Telluride in summer is to get lost in its wilderness. And it has it all-trout-filled rivers and lakes and 250 miles of trails made for mountain biking and hiking.

The less aerobically inclined enjoy slow walks to Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado’s longest free-falling waterfall, or playing a round at the Telluride Golf Club. Here, golfers feel virile as they drive like Tiger Woods on the 9,300-foot-high, 18-hole, par-72 course.

Do it all, or just sit back and enjoy the panoramic views and mining town charm. Either way, you’ll be glad you came.

DON’T MISS Mountain Film celebrates films that showcase wild places, exotic cultures, traditional mountaineering, contemporary environmental issues and dramatic adventures.
