Summer Resorts 2002-Midwest: Lutsen, Minn.

Lutsen, Minn.

The combination of the Sawtooth Mountain peaks and Lake Superior’s even more massive water drew summer visitors from Duluth and the Twin Cities long before a lift was ever installed at Lutsen. Back then, guests came to hike, fish and relax in the lakeshore’s temperate summer clime. Today, they can do all that and more: Prime attractions include the ski area’s 30 miles of mountain bike trails, the heartland’s only lift-served biking and 27 spectacular holes of mountain golf at nearby Superior National, one of Minnesota’s best courses.

Mountain bikers test their mettle against a variety of trails, ranging from white-knuckle singletrack to gentle family pathways. And hiking options are just as bountiful. From the top of Moose Mountain (accessible by foot or gondola), enjoy a short hike to the observation deck for expansive views. Looking for a longer loop? Try the 10-mile, three-peak tour of Lutsen’s Sawtooth Mountain Park.

Hard work requires a comfortable bed, and at Lutsen the options are endless. Some are on-mountain (Mountain Inn), others lakeside (Lutsen Resort & Sea Villas) and still others can be found on the banks of the Poplar River. For dinner, Papa Charlie’s serves up not only some of the best food and views in the area, it also has a nightclub that rocks late into the night, just in case you have any energy left. ¿M.T.

DON’T MISS Dining at lakeside Lutsen Resort (1.5 miles from the ski area) where the food is surpassed only by the view of the lake.
