Summer Resorts 2002-Northern Rockies: Deer Valley and Park City, Utah

Deer Valley & Park City, Utah

If you thought the Park City area looked good through the Olympic lens, you should see it in person when the wildflowers bloom. Come summer, Park City's Main Street reverberates with festivals and concerts, as do the hills that surround it. And Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons are all less than a mile away from this epicenter of action. For Type-A's, what to do first is the toughest decision.

Deer Valley's 50 miles of lift-served terrain is a good place to start. Brave? Charge down the NORBA Championship downhill course. Contemplative? Meander on the Scenic Overlook Trail. Tired? A trip on the Sterling Lift is a scenic adventure in itself. From the 9,400-foot summit of Bald Mountain, the Jordanelle Reservoir sparkles against a backdrop of blue sky and green sage. This vantage also gives you perspective on just how much there is to do here: golf courses there, tennis courts here, rivers to flyfish, pools to swim, not to mention horseback riding and camps for every discipline for anyone age 4 and up.

At night, book a table at one of Deer Valley's award-winning restaurants (Mariposa and Valhalla come to mind) or go casual on Park City's Main Street, where pre-dinner cocktails often blur into late-night revelry. After all, even Type-A's have to let loose sometimes. ¿Natalie Kurylko
