Head to Northstar for a romantic summer getaway, and you'll secretly wish you'd brought the kids. Rated by SKI readers as one of the nation's top three resorts for winter family programs, Northstar maintains a kid-friendly attitude year-round. Exhibit A: the Adventure Park, with its 25-foot climbing wall and high-ropes course. When kids tire of climbing, they can frolic at the Swim & Racquet Club (swimming pool, tennis courts, arcade) or play cowboy on guided horseback tours. Parents who can't keep up can send tykes ages 2-10 to Minors' Camp for a full day of organized activities ($56, including lunch). That frees adults to flyfish in Northstar's stocked 10-acre Sawmill Lake or tee off at the Robert Muir Graves golf course. This championship layout, recently certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, features water hazards on 14 of its 18 holes. Wide-open links-style play dominates the front nine, narrowing into tight, tree-lined fairways on the back. Because golf has built Northstar's summer reputation, many visitors miss its equally praiseworthy mountain bike park, with 100 miles of trails-the most lift-serviced terrain in Northern California. Hone your technical skills on the Altitude Adjustment trail, or take the whole family on gentle Sawmill Flat. You did bring the family, didn't you?

•DON'T MISS After a round of golf, retire to the deck of the Martis Valley Grille for great burgers and sweeping views of the Sierra across the Martis Valley.

•BEST DEAL Two nights' lodging, plus a round of golf or a multi-ride biking or hiking lift ticket, starts at $120 per person, double occu-pancy. 800-466-6784; northstarattahoe.com
