Ligety Worlds GS win

Despite incoming fog, Ted Ligety put down a clean second run to win the men’s giant slalom at the FIS World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Ligety was fourth after the first run, and his strong second run pushed him ahead of silver medalist Cyprien Richard of France by eight hundredths of a second. Bode Miller came in 12th and Warner Nickerson placed 35th.

It’s been a big week for the U.S. Team despite challenging courses, injury and less than favorable weather.  Lindsey Vonn came in second in the women’s downhill and Julia Mancuso got silver in super-G, but Ligety’s gold was the first win for the team.

"It's not easy being one of the favorites and being able to perform in this type of conditions,” Ligety said. “I feel really lucky to come away with the win. Ski racing isn't always a guarantee like it is for some other sports. After the first run I knew I was in touch and I knew if I had a really good run I could move up onto the podium and maybe get the win so I pushed really hard."

After his win, Ligety is  in the lead in World Cup giant slalom standings.

Here’s what else he had to say after the race.
