Recognizing that most parents don’t really enjoy trying to keep up with their offspring, adventure tour operators and resorts are offering an increasing number of teen-only multi-sport trips. Long the domain of hardcore programs such as Outward Bound and Nols, these spinoff programs are generally softer and won’t push your kid to the brink. Most adventures typically range in length from 6 to 21 days, and include wilderness safety and survival training. Here are two of the numerous options:

Aspen Outbound is a program offered by the Aspen Skiing Company. Based out of Aspen, Colo., the trips are for teens age 13-17 and last three or four weeks. Both the month-long Sands to Summits program and the three-week Colorado Rockies program include horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, camping, rock climbing and whitewater rafting. AAVE Teen Adventures offers courses throughout the world, but some of its best are on the homefront in Colorado, Utah and Washington. Programs, which range in length from 3 to 21 days, are available with various intensities and activities. Contact: (800) 222-3595; aave.com.
