The Ptarmigan Inn

Sacrifice a little glitz, but get friendly service and a super-close location.
ptarmigan steam boat

This place is nothing fancy. In fact, the décor is seriously dated, but everyone who works there is so gracious and accommodating, and you are so close to the gondola that it doesn’t matter what your bedspread looks like or that the fireplace area in the lobby is a little small. The Ptarmigan is affordable and clean, bottom line. If you don’t feel like driving, there is a free shuttle service right outside the hotel that you can use to get to the slopes. Don’t have your own gear? Go downstairs to Christie Sports on your way to the mountain and rent whatever you need (make sure to call ahead). On your way back, drop off your skis at the free locker service and hit the pool and sauna area to socialize with other guests. After your meet-and-greet, swing by the front desk to pick up the password to log on to the free Wi-Fi and rent a VHS movie (that’s right, they are still using VHS). The restaurant in the hotel, Snowbird, is pretty good—try the Rueben. Even though Ptarmigan is nothing special to look at, the ease of the location and extremely helpful staff make it totally worth sacrificing a little glitz.
