Getting There From L.A., take I-10 East to San Bernardino; exit on Highway 30 North. Follow 30 as it turns into Highway 330 East and winds into the mountains, through Running Springs, then turns into Highway 18. Turn right at the dam capping the end of Big Bear Lake and follow Route 18 through the village of Big Bear Lake, where it turns into Big Bear Boulevard. Take the boulevard past “fast-food row” to the light at Summit Boulevard. Turn right and drive two blocks to Snow Summit.
Closest Lodging About 15,000 beds are available for overnight visitors in Big Bear Lake. Northwoods Resort & Conference Center (800-866-3121) is a full-service hotel with outdoor pool/spa. Forest Shores Inn (800-317-9814) is located lakeside and gets three stars from AAA.
Best Eats Iron Squirrel (909-866-9121) serves French-flavored upscale continental cuisine; reservations recommended. Sushi Ichiban (909-866-6413) is great. BLT’s (909-866-6659) makes great sandwiches to go. At the mountain, check out the cheap tacos at the Bear Bottom Lodge.
