With his business partner, Earl Eaton, he hiked up an unnamed mountain in 1957, cresting the 11,250-foot summit after a seven-hour slog through spring snow. Before him, Seibert saw "a series of bowls stretching to the horizon; a virtual treeless universe of boundless powder, open slopes and open sky." We know it as Vail. A toast to Seibert—and to every other pioneer who realized the potential of the mountains.
