Park City, UT, May 8, 2000–Reigning World Cup moguls champion AnnBattelle (Steamboat Springs, CO) and aerials champion Eric Bergoust(Missoula, MT) – who set a world record for highest score last seasonafter sweeping the 1998 Olympic gold medal and gold again at the 1999World Championships – top a list of 45 athletes named to the U.S.Freestyle Ski Team for the 2000-01 World Cup season, Head Coach JeffWintersteen said Monday. The team enters the final warmup season priorto the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and will compete at theWorld Championships Jan. 14-21 at Blackcomb Mountain in BritishColumbia.
The group includes 26 men and 19 women, including the return of ’98Olympic moguls champion Jonny Moseley (Tiburon, CA), ’92 Olympicchampion Donna Weinbrecht (West Milford, NJ), a five-time World Cupmoguls champion, and two-time Olympic aerialist Tracy Evans (Hornell,NY). All three have been away from competition for the past two seasons.
Ten members of the Ski Team have won World Cup events.
There are two reigning and three former World Junior Championships goldmedalists. Aerialist Ryan St. Onge (Winter Park, CO) and dual mogulschampion Travis Mayer (Steamboat Springs, CO) won last season in Italy.Joe Pack (Park City, UT) won the 1996 aerials crown in Australia while1997 world junior moguls champion Hannah Hardaway (Moultonborough, NH)won in Finland and Parker Schmidt (Steamboat Springs, CO) won the 1999aerials title in Sweden. Hardaway won the Nor Am moguls and dual mogulstitles last season in addition to the U.S. title in both events at theChevy Truck U.S. Freestyle Championships in March.
“This is a team with an excellent balance between veterans and youngtalent starting to emerge internationally,” said Wintersteen, a formerWorld Cup freestyle skier who enters his second season as U.S. headcoach. “We have high expectations for these athletes, and success at the2002 Olympics is an obvious goal But, with the World Championships inJanuary and the World Cup, we can’t lose sight of the major competitionthis winter, which comes first.”
