Arapahoe Basin, CO October 7, 2003 A-Basin Release)–Early this morning A-Basin started to make snow. Six guns blew snow from midnight until 7:30 a.m. from mid-mountain to the bottom of High Noon.
Arapahoe Basin enters its second year of snowmaking this fall. Last year the ski area’s snowmaking system was 80% complete and only blew snow for nineteen nights starting on November 20. The ski area opened on November 16 with all natural snow. The system is now 100% operational and with recent cooler night temperatures the snowmaking crew has been able to get the guns in gear a bit earlier.
The snowmaking system is designed to cover one hundred and twenty five acres from the top of Lenawee face to the base area. Eleven runs served by four lifts will benefit from the snowmaking effort.
A-Basin’s opening date has not been announced, but ski area officials hope to open the ski area by late October. Temperatures, humidity and natural snowfall will be watched closely and snow will be blown whenever the opportunity exists. Management’s goal is to be the first ski area open in Colorado for the 2003-04 ski season.
