Getting There From New York City (5 hours): New York State Throughway (I-87) north to Albany, N.Y. (Exit 24); Adirondack Northway (also I-87) north to Exit 30; Route 9 north to Route 73; Route 73 to Lake Placid. From Boston (5 hours): Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) west to Albany; I-787 north to Cohoes, N.Y.; Route 7 west to I-87; I-87 north to Exit 30; follow directions from Exit 30 above.
Olympic Venues Whiteface Mountain, Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenburg (bobsled, luge, Nordic facilities), the Intervale-MacKenzie Ski Jumping Complex, the Olympic Center (hockey rink, museum, shop), Sheffield Speed Skating Oval. The Gold Medal Total Winter Experience pass ($39) buys access to all facilities and a bobsled ride. Individual rides: $30. Call (523-4436).
Diversions Tobogganing (Lake Placid Toboggan Chute, Wed.-Sun., adults $5; (523-2591). Also: dog-sled rides, ice-climbing lessons, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, sleigh rides. Information available at the Visitors Bureau office near the main doors of the Olympic Center.

Candlelit fine-dining: Averill Corning Dining Room at Mirror Lake Inn (523-2544), Lake Placid Lodge (523-2700). Fun and different: Fifties-themed Mel's Diner in nearby Wilmington.
AprÈs Ski The Lake Placid Pub and Brewery taps its own delicious brew; The Cottage at Mirror Lake Inn has splendid lake and mountain views; both offer full menus. Also: Dancing Bear Lounge at the Hilton.
