Austrian Juniors Dominate World Junior Alpine Champs

Verbier, Switzerland, Feb. 8, 2001--The schedule switched from speed events to men's giant slalom Thursday at the World Junior AlpineChampionships, but the result was pretty much the same: Austrians took the top two spots and four of the first five places. Josh Whitham (TahoeCity, CA/Squaw Valley Ski Team) was 11th, leading all five U.S. juniors into the top 25.

Hannes Reiter won the GS in 2:08.79 with teammate Johann Grugger taking the silver medal in 2:08.86. Italy's Peter Fill was third in 2:08.92.

Whitham had a two-run time of 2:10.18 with Jake Zamansky (Carbondale, CO/Aspen Ski Club) in 15th place at 2:10.87. David Lamb (SteamboatSprings, CO; Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club) finished 21st in 2:11.44 with TJ Lanning (Park City, UT; Park City Ski Team) 23rd in 2:11.64,and Gordon Gray (New York City/Green Mountain Valley School) was 25th in 2:11.02.

The men complete their schedule Friday with slalom and the women compete in GS and slalom on the weekend. Combined medals also will beawarded.
