Rob Boyd is Whistler’s golden child. Still celebrated today for being the first Canadian male to win a World Cup downhill race on home turf (Whistler, ’89), he learned to ski at age 3 on his dad’s homemade ropetow in Vernon, B.C. During his 12-year stint on the Canadian downhill team (a.k.a. the “Crazy Canucks”), Boyd won a total of three World Cup downhill races, finished on the podium six times and qualified for three Olympics (’88, ’92, ’94). He now serves as the head coach for the Canadian National Ski Team’s women’s speed program. Boyd’s favorite Olympic moment? “Walking into the opening ceremonies in Calgary, ’88, and being overwhelmed by the cheering of the crowd for Team Canada.”
