SUMMIT FEVER
It was a lean expedition, and the weather would’ve scared most ski mountaineers back to base camp (or the nearest book agent). But not this Swiss-American team. On January 23, François Portmann (photographer) and Justin Shaffer (athlete) left their high camp in Manhattan on a southbound F train and made a daring bid to summit the Brooklyn Bridge. Logistics were a nightmare. (You think those wily Sherpas drive a hard bargain? Try haggling with a Bangladeshi MetroCard vendor.) Physically, the duo was up to the challenge: “Crossing York Street nearly killed us,” says Portmann. “But we were able to grab a slice and refuel.” Click on the slideshow below to see more of their adventures in the Big Apple.
