Our favorite view in most mountain homes isn’t through a picture window.

It’s from right here, in front of a sturdy stone fireplace, as logs crackle, flames dance and thick waves of warmth radiate gently from the hearth. Fires are mesmerizing, an ever-changing vista of peaks and valleys to rival any mountain range. They’re also an important source of heat and light-and, in an age of cold technological efficiency, a reminder of the pleasures of simplicity. Few of us nowadays depend on burning wood to heat our living spaces, but fewer still would consider a mountain home complete without a blazing fire to entice us out of bed on a cold morning or to beckon us home from a long day in the elements. So here’s to the fireplace. You bring the wood. We’ll bring the wine.
