It’s 2 pm, you’ve been on the slopes for hours, and you’re in dire need of a quick pick-me-up. International Sports Nutrition claims it can help. The company’s new Energy Gum contains caffeine, Kola Nut and Guarana to help stimulate the release of free fatty acids that can then be used as fuel. But does it work? “Your overall diet is what’s important,” says Eileen Faughey, M.A., R.D, from Nutrition Connections in Boulder, Colo. “The gum may have some benefits, but it might make more of a difference for an elite athlete rather than a recreational one.” Hopefully the Cappuccino Coffee flavor works a lot better than it tastes.
