VIENNA, Austria (AP) — Defending World Cup champion Stephan Eberharter will not race this weekend in Slovenia because of lower back pain.

The 34-year-old downhill star was practicing with his team Thursday when the pain worsened. He was examined and advised not to compete, the Austrian Ski Federation said.

Dr. Wolfgang Hackl said he believed Eberharter would be able to return to World Cup competition next week.

Eberharter is fourth in the overall standings, trailing leader and countryman Hermann Maier by 93 points. Eberharter is first in the downhill standings, leading Maier by 163 points.
