Ever rush into an untracked powder field at freeway speed only to get spun around backward and land on your bum? Here’s the problem: You’re driving into the powder without shifting gears. As you transition from the groomed to the untracked, you’re pressuring your downhill ski as if you were carving turns on the hardpack. All that force causes your downhill ski to dive— while the unweighted, inside edge of your uphill ski catches on the powder. Your hips swivel, your upper body follows, and before you know it, you’re flat on your back.
