Getting There
From New York (5 1/2 hours): Take I-95 north to New Haven, Conn., then I-91 north to I-93 in St. Johnsbury, Vt. (Exit 19), then I-93 south to Franconia Notch; take Exit 3 for the Peabody Express and the learning area, or Exit 2 for the Tram and more difficult terrain. From Boston (2 1/2 hours): take I-93 all the way to Exit 2 or 3.
Dining Out
On A Budget: In Franconia, the Cannonball Cafe and Deli (823-7478) for unusual sandwiches and speciality dishes, or Dutch Treat Restaurant (823-8851) for pizzas, Italian fare and big-screen TV. In Littleton, the Clamshell (444-6445) for surf-and-turf dishes and a salad bar. Money Is No Object: In Bethlehem, Tim-Bir Alley (444-6142) for fine dining in a romantic setting. In Franconia, the Franconia Inn (823-5542) for American and Continental cuisine in an elegant space. In Littleton, the Flying Moose Cafe (444-2661) for wood-grilled items and seafood.
Sleeping In
(All rates are per person, based on double occupancy.) Cannon Mountain offers no lodging of its own, but surrounding towns offer a wide range of options. For budget accommodations try The Red Coach Inn ($40-$55; 800-262-2493) in Franconia. There’s a wealth of fine inns and B&Bs, including the Franconia Inn ($46-$68; 800-473-5299) and the Horse and Hound ($42; 800-450-5501) in Franconia; The Hilltop Inn ($45-$60; 800-770-5695) and the Sugar Hill Inn ($45-$113; 800-548-4748) in Sugar Hill; and Adair ($60-$123, breakfast and tea included; 888-444-2600) and The Balmoral ($33-$70; 869-3169) in Bethlehem.
Diversions
The New England Ski Museum at Cannon Mountain (800-639-4181) includes an assortment of educational and entertaining skiing exhibits. The Robert Frost Place (823-5510) is closed Columbus Day to Memorial Day, but you can still wander the grounds, including its nature trail. Driving Route 117 west out of Franconia takes you through the beautiful village of Sugar Hill; watch for the roadside sign commemorating the first ski school in America, begun in 1929 by the Austrian ski impresario Sig Buchmayr.
