Expedition Kirkwood Kicks Off With Pro Skier Dyer

KIRKWOOD, CA - (News Release - Dec. 13, 2007) — Expedition: Kirkwood Kickoff Weekend will take over the slopes at Kirkwood this Saturday and Sunday, December 15 & 16, with giveaways, tips and teaser clinics designed to get your skills going in the right direction for the upcoming season. Joining the Expedition Guides will be freeskiing diva Lynsey Dyer from Rossignol Skis and Warren Miller films to share her passion for the sport and help stoke the enthusiasm.

Expedition: Kirkwood is California's only all-mountain education program designed to expand guests' knowledge of mountain exploration, taking skiers and riders beyond their boundaries, and teaching them new ways to navigate the slopes. Clinics are for intermediate through expert ability levels and will be offered each day for skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers.

For more information on this weekend or any other Expedition: Kirkwood product, please call 209.258.7360 or email expedition@kirkwood.com. In addition to Chairs 1, 5, and 11, Kirkwood plans to open Chairs 7 and 9 this weekend along with its Timber Creek Base Facilities, ranked one of the "Top Ten Places to Learn to Ski by USA Today.

Snowmaking efforts are currently focused on getting Chair 6 open with access to the legendary terrain of Kirkwood's upper mountain. Q&A With Lynsey Dyer

We talk Pretty Faces, an edit contest, and what you should watch for this fall.

She Jumps

Pro Skiers Turned Philanthropists

Lately some pro skiers have been using their influence to start nonprofits. We take a look at She Jumps, an organization co-founded by pro skier Lynsey Dyer, that aims to get girls into the outdoors. She Jumps is hosting a fundraiser in Salt Lake City on January 21. We also check out Alpine Initiatives, started by a group of skiers, that helps developing countries in need.

Kirkwood is 40 minutes from South Shore, but locals will tell you that the drive is worth it. Kirkwood has terrain for all levels of skiers/riders with The Wall – famous extreme terrain, steeps on the backside, cruiser runs down Buckboard off Chair 11, and beginner/intermediate runs near Timber Creek off Chair 7. “There’s our group of five skiers in our 50s and 60s who ski Kirkwood most Saturday mornings ever since our 30s,” said Carl Fair, a 35-year resident and owner/broker of Century 21 at Tahoe Paradise. “We park close to Chair 7, take our Advil, get our boots on, wrap our knee braces and put on our helmets. We take Chair 7 up, ski down to Chair 6 for a run or two, then off to our favorite finger chutes off Chair 10. At this age, having 90 to 100 mm under our feet makes us feel like we are in our 30s again. The Notch, All the Way, and The Sisters with the surrounding trees are a blast.” Grab some grub at the General Store inside Red Cliffs; may we suggest a tall-boy of local beer and a gourmet slice of pizza that are friendly on the wallet? Proceed to the couch upstairs at Red Cliffs to refuel, recharge, and soak in the scenic views. Info: 209-258-6000 or kirkwood.com.

Kirkwood the Third Tahoe resort in Vail's Empire

Tahoe becomes the new battleground in the resort industry.

Inside Line: Kirkwood, CA

Kirkwood is off the grid in more ways than one. The whole place runs on generators. Lift lines are six people deep on a powder day. Sierra storms fill the ski-porn-worthy terrain, closing roads and shutting down lifts for days. But with inbounds runs slanted up to 42 degrees, the most reliable snow in the area, and chutes that make big-mountain skiers queasy, it’s hard to believe the resort stays so low-key. Thank the hourlong drive from South Lake Tahoe’s packed casinos and resorts, which ensures Kirkwood remains unsullied by the masses. Just the way skiers there like it.
