Durango, CO July 1, 2004 – Gather up the family and head to Durango Mountain Resort for a fun-filled 4th of July. Sunday, the mountain will host Red, White and Blues with live entertainment, games and the second race of the Purgatory Downhill Series. Kids of all ages will enjoy the celebration, plus DMR’s summer activities including Alpine Slide, Mini Golf, mountain biking, hiking and more.
The fun kicks off at noon on the beach in front of Purgy’s. Local favorite “Catch 22″will play Blues music on the deck of Purgy’s at noon and again at 2 pm. Hang out and dance to the tunes, or try your hand at the unique games scheduled including watermelons seed spitting and burping contests. Coke floats, featuring the new C2, will be available for $1, with proceeds benefiting the Adaptive Sports Association. The celebration wraps up at 5 pm, just in time to head back to town and catch Durango’s fireworks display.
This weekend is also the second race in the new Purgatory Downhill Series. The five Sunday race series tests downhill mountain bikers as they follow a course that drops 1000 vertical feet and criss-crosses the NORBA, World Cup and World Championship courses on Purgatory Mountain. Last weekend, 32 riders tackled the course including local legends Chris O’Driscoll and Ned Overend.
Registration is Sunday, July 4th at 10:30 am; entry is $10 plus a $5 lift ticket. The race starts at 1 pm and is open to Juniors, Women and Men in Beginner, Sport, Expert and Semi Pro/Pro divisions. Racers under 18 MUST have a parent present for registration.
